On July 24th, 2013, Pope Francis made an emotional request for Roman Catholics to shun materialism. The pope travelled from one of the most important shrines in Latin America; which he refers to as ‘a shrine of human suffering’. The pope then criticized the “dealers of death” who sell drugs and said that the “scourge of drug-trafficking that favors violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage.” The pope discussed, if there’s a decline in the spread and impact of drug addiction, it will not be attained by a liberalization of drug use, as is presently being anticipated in several parts of Latin America.”

The struggles of the church in Latin American remained unchanged, they’re mainly trying to keep away the Catholics from the promises, made by other churches to help finding material wealth. “It is true that nowadays, to some extent, people feels attracted to money, success, power and pleasure.” Many people would rather betray their own culture and people for material happiness. I question, is this going to take them anywhere? Basically, people thinks beyond the point of view in today’s societies; furthermore even the Catholic Church was view as a kind of old and stuffy place.

From the topics discussed in class on Marxian Economics, Materialism was basically viewed as a principle as basic necessities to real life of human beings. Therefore, we must use our knowledge, skills and material resources in order for survival. Connecting with the article, and readings covered in class, together both are explaining the material wealth that people need in their lives for them to be happy.
