RUTGERS UNIVERSITY Livingston Campus Special Topics: Leadership (Cr. 3) 37:533:322:01 Mondays and Thursdays Fall 2011 Professor: Dave Ferio Office: 216 Levin Office Hours: M-F and by appointment – I check emails frequently Email: ferio@smlr.rutgers.edu Phone: (732) 445-0862 COURSE OBJECTIVES This is an introductory course to organizational leadership. This course has three main purposes: 1. To help you develop an understanding of the basic principles of organizational leadership. 2. To assist in applying your knowledge of organizational leadership to actual situations. 3. To help you prepare for work as a professional; someone who shapes his/her own expertise to fit the realities of complex business problems, contributes his/her expertise effectively to the collective process of value creation, and works with others cooperatively, ethically, and competently. 4. To understand the importance of HR leadership to firm success. To achieve these goals, we will cover a wide variety of topics such as the nature of managerial work, classical and contemporary theories of leadership, ethical leadership in teams and decision groups, and the role of power, politics, and organizational culture. The emphasis in this course will be on the flexible and pragmatic application of leadership theory in order to allow you to better understand how leadership affects the behavior of people and organizations. This course will use a variety of learning approaches including traditional lectures, discussions, and group exercises. Multiple learning approaches will satisfy your diverse learning needs and, very importantly, enable you to contribute your experiences to the class. You are expected to attend all classes (I take attendance!), to read the relevant chapters, and do the assignments prior to our classes.
