The central religious beliefs of Islam are reflected in the Five Pillars of Islam. Considered God’s commandments, a Muslim is obligated to fulfill these instructions from God. These are a set of standards that are shared by many Muslim faiths. Each pillar represents a different commandment or instruction.

The first pillar sets an example of pure faith to one God and his messenger Muhammad. The word of the Qur’an should be told to everyone so they can make a sound choice of religious beliefs to follow. Do not push the religion, but let all know of its existence. Respect all prophets and revealed scriptures, (Mary Pat Fisher, 2005).

The second pillar is the occurrence of daily prayer. Throughout the country, Muslims are united five times a day through recital of prayers, passages, and ritual. Muslims observe the Sabbath Day daily and reciting is believed to strengthen the word of God. Praying cleanses the heart and comforts the soul. Bowing instills a great gratitude and obedience to one God, (Mary Pat Fisher, 2005).

The third pillar is spiritual tithing and almsgiving, zakat. To decrease greed and personal wealth, Muslims are required to donate at least two and a half percent to needy Muslims. Large contributions are given to others of different faiths and nationalities. Shi’a is required to give one-fifth of their disposable income to the Imam. Half of this money is used as the deputy thinks appropriate and the other half goes to the descendents of the Prophet to prevent poverty, (Mary Pat Fisher, 2005).

The fourth pillar is fasting. Although it is highly recommended to fast frequently, only one is required. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, and smoking for an entire month. Other than a few participating requirements, everyone across the nations is performing the fourth pillar.
