Physical Education or Sporting Education? Discuss the benefits and values of these two approaches for young people in education.

Sporting Education is a curriculum and instructional model for physical education, which aims to develop students as competent, literate and enthusiastic sports people through experiencing sport authentically (Siedentop, 1994). On the other hand physical education emphasizes on learning in a mainly physical context as they aim to develop specific knowledge, skill and understanding and to promote physical development and competence. This kind of learning promotes participation in sport. (National Curriculum Council,1992,). In this assignment I will be discussing the benefits and values of sporting education and physical education with relation to young people.

“The Government believes that Two hours of physical activity a week including the national curriculum for Physical Education and extra curriculum activities should be an aspiration for all schools”(Department of Education 1996). This is one of the main reasons why physical education had remained compulsory as it has positive effects it has on health, both during childhood and later on in life. Talbot (2001) suggests that Physical Education (PE) helps children to develop respect for the body – their own and others. He also believes that Physical Education helps the students develop self-confidence, self esteem, social and cognitive development, their academic achievement as well as an understanding of aerobic and anaerobic physical activity. PE also helps further develop self-discovery and skill development. Therefore it is important to understand the motivational, cognitive and affective processes, which will prove whether students find the lessons beneficial or worthless (Richard Bailey & David Kirck, 2009).
