Case Study 1: Shark Attack

1. Identify at least five organ systems in this region of the arm that the surgeon would have marked for reattachment.

The cardiovascular system containing blood vessels needs to be reattached to serve its function in equalizing temperature and oxygen & nutrient flow to the tissues. The skeletal system, made up of cartilage, bones and joints, needs to be readjusted and attached to allow movement with the muscular system. The muscular system needs to be reattached to assist in movement with the skeletal system and maintain body temperature. The lymphatic system can be marked for reattachment so that it can function in returning fluid to the blood and defending against pathogens. The skin of the integumentary system needs to be reattached to aid in protection of internal organs and sensory response, if possible.

2. List the names of the specific structures that had to be reattached.

The skin surrounding the forearm. The right humerus bone would need to be reattached. Specific structures of the muscular system requiring reattachment are the right biceps brachii, right brachialis, right triceps brachii, right coracobrachialis and the right brachioradialis. In the nervous system, if possible, the nerves that had to be reattached is the right radial nerve, right ulnar nerve, right posterior cutaneous nerve of forearm, right lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm, right medial cutaneous nerve of arm, right medial cutaneous nerve of forearm, right median nerve and the right musculocutaneous nerve. The arteries, such as the right superior ulnar collateral artery, right inferior collateral artery, right radial collateral artery, right medial collateral artery, and the right brachial artery. The veins, such as the right basilic vein, right cephalic vein, right median collateral vein, right radial collateral vein, right inferior ulnar collateral vein, right superior ulnar collateral vein, and the right profunda brachii vein.
