In your own words, define difference and inequality, and provide an example of each on City Road.

City Road is one of the busiest roads in Cardiff. It is a vibrant street full of small business, shops, restaurants and people from different ethnicities and backgrounds. (The Life and times of the Street: Part 1)

Mark Hocking has worked on City Road since the early 1970s and previously owned a successful garage carrying out car repairs, however, with the wider economic changes business became more competitive. (The Life and times of the Street: Part 1 Inequalities on the Street)

This was a turning point for Mark because in order for his business to survive, he needed to review his business strategy or risk closing in the face of increasing competition. Mark now sells bespoke metal products and because of his personal choice to change, his business remains successful.

Then you have Colin Buttwell, the local newsagent who has been a shop owner on City Road for over a decade. Unlike Mark Hocking, Colin didn't reinvent his business, and was eventually forced to close his shop due to competition from the large supermarkets. (The Life and times of the Street: Part 1 Inequalities on the Street)

The stories of Mark and Colin are good examples of how social lives on City road have changed and remained the same over a period of time. (The Life and times of the Street: Part 1 Inequalities on the Street)

An example of inequality on City Road would be Janet Symmons who owns Xquisite Africa. Janet contributes to making social lives in Africa as well as on City road as she exports products from one country to sell in another. As her merchandise is predominantly designed to attract African clientele, these people may feel excluded from other shops on the road.
