When designing a wide area network there are many variables that must be considered. One of these specific details defines if a network can support VPN or dial-up. This is a very important decision because of the security and use of the network itself. Our network will use a VPN type network to ensure the companies success and productivity throughout daily operations.

Ups and Downs of VPN

There are many advantages to using the type of remote access solution that we will be discussing in this paper. The choices a company makes to define the network solution used are made by considering every aspect of how a company will be using it's network. One advantage of utilizing a VPN solution is that it creates a secure and private route for business information to be sent from one location to another. This security is vital for any company that would need to transmit data over a large distance for a low overhead cost. By using a VPN solution a company can effectively incorporate local networking and database solutions and have the ability to share those functions internally with external offices. A Virtual Private Network would give the company the ability to function on a nationwide level without spending a fortune to buy individual land lines by the mile just to have a singular path dedicated to their operations. By setting a a VPN across the Internet the company accomplishes the same idea without the high cost of dedicated service lines.

Some disadvantages of operating a VPN are that sometimes the security that it provides does not counteract the amount of usable features. A VPN is a solution for a company to transmit sensitive data great distance for little cost while remaining secure.
