Jose Rizal’s Journey to Spain
Paciano Rizal, the older brother of Jose Rizal, saw that there is a limited offer of education in the Philippines way back then. So he decided to send him in Europe, which is the innovative country at that time and he is confident that Jose Rizal will accomplish & do well in his education in Europe. Is it the first time Jose Rizal will travel to Spain? How old is he back then? How long is this journey going to take? Is he alone in the Journey? What are experiences he encounters during the trip? What did he do right away after he arrived in Barcelona?
On May 3, 1882, Rizal left the Philippines for the first time at the age of 21 and his route was in Spain. He boarded the Salvadora using a passport of Jose Mercado, which was procured for him by his uncle Antonio Rivera, father of Leonor Rivera. He was accompanied to the quay where the Salvadora was moored by his uncle Antonio, Vicente Gella, and Mateo Evangelista, but he travels alone. He got seasick on board. The next morning he’s still seasick, but he takes time to converse with the other passengers and even play chess with them, and always win. Sometime he wanders the ship and sit on the deck and fill his eyes with beautiful scenery of mountains and islands. The Salvadora docks in Singapore. While waiting for his next boat, he wanders around towns of Singapore and made observations about their crafts, foods and people. He boarded Djemnah to continue his trip to Spain; he finds the boat clean and well kept. He was sea sick again, and as always he always converse with the passengers.
One night in May, when he was on his way to Marseilles, Rizal had a terrible dream. He dreamed he was traveling with her eldest sister Saturnina and their path was blocked by snakes.
