Of Mice and Men: Persuasive Paper

It’s ethical to kill someone because they will end up agony if you don’t, right? If there was absolutely no hope for the person to subsist in this world any longer and their loved one, out of a desperate act of love, snatched the persons life knowing if they didn’t do the act the person would live in anguish. Would it be acceptable to finish the person’s life in that manner? Yes it would, but only in circumstance like this or similar to this because if not it might as well be considered brutal murder.

Although it might not be ethical to do this act it would be moral to some people, like George for example. He killed Lennie out of “brotherly love” to protect him from the pain he would have endured, which was the only and best thing George could do for Lennie given the situation that he was in. If George hadn’t killed Lennie then he would have been murdered by Curly or have been sent to jail without George there to help him. Now both of these scenarios would either lead Lennie either into despair and or death. Thus, George’s decision to execute Lennie was the right one, the moral one even though it wasn’t ethical.

Now George’s mercy killing was just that, killing to prevent further pain it was a “good death. George acknowledge that Lennie could never live freely, so George musters the courage to do what Candy couldn’t do to his old dog whom was living in agony. The phrase “love hurts’ can be somewhat be applied to this situation given that George truly didn’t want to kill Lennie but out of “brotherly love” did so. George would have never forgiven himself if he didn’t kill Lennie and just let someone else determine his fate. It would be a disgrace to George to let someone else murder Lennie. George had not choice, but to take Lennie’s life from his hands even though it hurt to kill him, his best friend
