Leadership Self-Assessment Paper

In my opinion, leadership is a bidirectional influence process which occurs between leaders and followers, for the reason that both of them want to achieve common goals. I conclude that the core contents of leadership are a series of systematic and continuous actions that focus on influencing behavior. In order to influence followers positively, leaders’ behaviors can be classified into supportive, directive, participative, charismatic, and reward and punishment behavior. Supportive leaders show consideration, acceptance, and concern for the needs and feeling of followers. Directive leadership behaviors concentrate on assigning specific tasks, clarifying expectations, setting goals and procedures for followers. Participative leaders will involve followers in making decisions through consulting, collaboration, and decision making. In reward and punishment leadership behavior, leaders will provide spiritual and physical benefits to motivate followers. Lastly, charismatic leaders who exhibit certain personal characteristics, abilities, and behaviors have strong influence on followers’ emotion, values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.
