Describe the major aspects of nutrition labeling regulations. List the information that must be displayed on food labels.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is a federal agency, that regulates the food industry, medication, and promotes public health in the United States. “The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), veterinary products, and cosmetics.” The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for establishing the laws and regulating the information found on food labels.

Many Americans are suffering with diabetes, heart disease and obesity. In order to manage these and other health issues, we must monitor what we eat and drink. I am a diabetic, and I remember after being diagnosed, my physician sent me to a dietician, who explained to me what I can eat, and how much of it to consume. She explained to me what was found on food labels and the correct way to read them.

The FDA requires food and beverage companies, to lit all ingredients, as well as nutrient content of Vitamins A & C, Minerals , Iron & Calcium, that are listed in each product . (p53) “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established specific serving sizes for various foods and requires that all labels for a given product use the same serving size” (p54) Food labels include the recommended serving size, servings per container, along with the quantities of nutrients and percentage values for a 2000 kcal diet. The nutrients that must be listed on food labels are:

1. Fat

2. Saturated Fat

3. Cholesterol

4. Carbohydrates

5. Fiber

6. Protein

7. Sodium

8. Potassium

9. Vitamin C

10. Vitamin A

11. Calcium
