3. Identify three individuals (past or present) in any field (e.g. business, government, military, religion) who use/used their leadership abilities to build respected, successful organizations. What type of leadership behaviors do/did they use to accomplish this feat? Be sure to relate them to leadership approaches presented in the text.
I will be discussing leaders who have used a situational approach to leadership in order to build respected, successful organizations. Barack Obama holds the American presidency, which is a multifaceted occupation that demands several kinds of leadership styles. He is a charismatic leader who has the ability to draw others to side with his ideas and motivate them to accomplish grand causes. He has shown culturally sensitive and transformational leadership in response to various situations that required different types of leadership models. Barack Obama is ambitious, confident, agreeable, outgoing, and conscientious. He is driven primarily by a need for achievement, but also has substantial affiliation needs a modest need for power. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a unique way of getting people to work together in nonviolent ways. He listened while others argued, and afterward would calmly sum up the argument and find a way to more forward. He was a point of balance and unity in the civil rights movement. Dr. King was a transformational leader. His dreams were bigger than the times in which he lived. He was also determined to fulfill his cause. Even though he endured several trials and tribulations (he was arrested over 25 times, and was hated by many), he stayed committed to his vision of equality. Lastly, he had very effective and impressive communication skills that allowed him to accomplish his vision, even if it ultimately cost him his life.
