Do you have siblings or people in your family that think they know everything? Well, I have a little brother that thinks he knows every little thing about anything. There was one thing he didn’t know how to do and that was playing a position in football on defense. I was experienced and I must say good playing that position so I could give him some points and advise about it. In teaching him how to play that position I had to be patience, stay calm, focused and role-model every tactic.

My brother being young I didn’t expect him to catch on quick so I had to be patience and make sure he was comprehending what I was telling him. My brother doesn’t like to be told what to do and he gets angry when he is. I had to also work on his anger and by making it fun so he wouldn’t forget everything I taught him. Being patient is very hard for me because I don’t like waiting on other people. I feel like I could be doing something else. Patience was key in helping him learn the moves, how to get away from the offensive player, find the player with the ball and keep him from making a touchdown. Like teachers, you can’t just rush through things because then you are not getting anywhere if the students are not progressing.

While teaching my brother this position on defense, I had to stay calm because my brother will get frustrated if he sees me getting frustrated. Staying calm made my brother think that I was enjoying teaching him how to play the position. This increased his confident level and he really start to listen to what I was telling him. My brother even began to calm down and relax. Staying calm also made the lesson I was teaching go much smoothly. I think about how my strategies of staying calm worked because if I had not my brother would not have listened from the start.

Demonstrating the moves and tactics was helpful because by him being young he was not sure about what I was taking about so showing him helped a lot. I think he is an unusual learner so...
