Vision Statement

There is a lot that I want to accomplish in five years. Creating a vision statement takes a lot of consideration. I had to ask myself a lot of thought-provoking questions in order to uncover my core values and highest goals. Through this process of introspection, I learned that I am at my worst when I don’t have a plan. Herb Kelleher, co-founder of Southwest Airlines and an architect of a universally successful career model, encouraged his employees to openly share their purpose, vision, and values (Baack, 2012). I believe that without a definite purpose, it is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve one’s aim in life. There is an extensive amount of studies on human motivation. The following excerpt explains the impact that personal vision plays on motivation, “according to Bandura’s social cognitive theory, possible futures and proximal goals that aid in future goal attainments are key elements of human motivation” (Masuda, 2010). This supports the idea that vision is central to getting what we want in life. All things are created twice; first in our minds and then in real life.

As I think about my ideal life, I know that it must be balanced in many different areas. In his book ‘The Success Principles’, Jack Canfield recognizes seven areas to include in any vision statement; work and career, finances, recreation and free time, health and fitness, relationships, personal goals, and contribution to the larger community. I recognize the importance of each one of these facets and will highlight my vision for my career and work next. In five years time, I will hold a management position within a Fortune 500 company making a six-figure salary. The team I lead will be a top performing team.
