1. TJX is one of the largest most popular off-price apparel and home fashion retailer in the United States that was founded in 1976. As an off price retailer, internal information systems were essential to maintaining margins and competitiveness. For retailers as large as TJX, IT systems were utilized to facilitate management in all areas including customers, vendors, suppliers, etc. In December 2006, TJX discovered that their security had been breached. Computer files were altered and data had been manipulated. TJX quickly began an internal investigation with security consultants but did not disclose to the public that their company had been hacked. It wasn’t until February 21, 2007 where the company announced the disclosure of the intrusion to the public that was found to have actually begun in July 2005. This gave rise to confidentiality issues impacting TJX’s reputation since it was uncertain as to what extent of valuable customer information had been stolen. All that was known is that records as far back as 2002 were stolen. As a result, Owen Richel, chief information officer (CIO) was in charge of dealing with TJX’s security renewal.

2. TJX Company – To maintain and focus on customer relations and competitiveness as one of the largest off price retailers in the United States to increase profits and maintain a strong reputation. They want to minimize and mitigate the severity of the effects caused by the breach as best as possible to the public.

Owen Richel (CIO) – To ensure and improve IT organization of TJX. CIO wants to maximize security and prevent any future breach of information systems pertaining overall company and customer data. Focus on short term and long term priorities to go beyond the minimum security requirements. Also, achieve strategic alignment of IT with TJX’s goals and objectives.
