I. Introduction

Oakland Athletics baseball team from ABA have hopes of winning a championship with the help of their three big star players; Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi, and Jason Isringhausen. The dreams did not last too long because the team lost a playoffs against the New York Yankees, a bigger team with stronger roster and higher revenues. After the season ends, the team lost its three big star players. The players were traded and they could not keep them, because there is limitation in budget.

Billy Beane, a father and a retired baseball player who now works as a general manager of Oakland Athletic. After finishing high school, Billy was offered a scholarship from Stanford University and was also given the opportunity to play in the MLB. He decided to join the baseball team instead of going to college although it was a big risk to take. He faced failure as a player for different teams before retirement. Nowadays, as a general manager of Oakland Athletic, Billy has high hopes in rebuilding his team although it does not has sufficient budget to get the players he wants.

Peter Brand is a Yale economics graduate who works for the Cleveland Indians as the players statistic analysis. Billy met Peter in a trading players meeting when he was trying to find new players for his team. Fascinated by Peter’s role in the meeting, Billy decided to hire Peter. Peter had the philosophy that a team needs to buy wins not players, meaning that a team should get a status instead of getting players to win games.
