The mission statement is a strategic tool: when used properly.

Executive Summary

The relationship between the structure of the organization with the mission / vision, goal and objective, for me, is like a house, the organizational structure is the skeleton of the house, while the others are trinkets or details that make the house function properly. In my opinion, for the newly established organization or company, it is impossible to discuss the work plan, budget and accountability without discussing the design of the chosen organizational structure. As with the agency / agencies that have been established, organizational structure is always considered given (assuming that is not entirely true), normally not be changed drastically unless by forced (change management). Mission statement is considered important and first step that that will be guidance or standard benchmark of the employee behavior, the output quality of the organization, etc. It’s a kind of motto, creed or maxim of a group. Good organization has a mission statement, but having a mission statement do not automatically make the organization worked well. Develop a good mission statement is not an easy job. However, a good mission statement is proven to affect the behavior of employees, which in turn affects the quality of the organization's output.

Evidence from two firms, as well as existing research, indicates that how manager’s point of view with the mission statements itself. Managers who understand the important in mission statement in influencing the inner workings of their organizations are likely to understand the mission’s usefulness. Others, managers who put their mission statement as a display and hope that magical thing will transform their organizational behavior are likely to be frustrated and don’t understand the benefits of the mission statement itself.
