Executive Summary

One of the more prominent and prevalent industries within Region III or Central Luzon is the pyrotechnic industry. This industry consists of both firecrackers and fireworks. The pyrotechnic industry traces back its humble beginnings from the Chinese and have been adopted by the Sta. Ana family from Bulacan. Their knowledge and talent of making quality fireworks has then been passed on to the succeeding generations.

The pyrotechnic industry progressed until the Martial Law when producing and selling were prohibited. After the Martial Law, the industry began its rise once again. Banking on tradition, more and more people were drawn to buy and use these fireworks and firecrackers. This made Bulacan the number 1 producer of pyrotechnic products in the country. In fact, the more famous producers have been exporting their products to countries such as Europe and they aim to tap more countries.

The production of pyrotechnics in Bulacan, although they are the biggest producers in the country, have reached a stagnant stage wherein they were not able to catch up with technology. Present conditions in fireworks factories would include manual labor, unrestricted operations, and hazardous situations that pose serious danger to the makers. Moreover, issues such as child labor are rampant in the industry. Raw materials needed to make fireworks are unregulated. They are ground, mixed and combined manually by the makers.

With the increasing demand for pyrotechnics, it is unfortunate that the industry has not been able to cope with the demand. Demand for fireworks are not only at its peak during the holidays. The pyrotechnic industry is now faced with a year-round demand because they are being used in different occasions such as weddings, fiestas and other significant occasions.
