Appropriate Use of Social Media

When I listened to Kelsey Hiland speak about all the types of social media sites, what not to do/put on them, and the real life stories about the consequences of what can happen when you misuse social media, I learned a lot. I know now that something as simple as having a gun as your profile picture can result in you being declined a job even if you have the skills required. What I got out of the whole presentation was that you need to be more aware of what you are posting. Before you post anything on a social media site you need to think about how it will affect your life in the long run and not just about how many likes you will get. You need to not post pictures of you underage drinking or even drinking at all, do not post inappropriate pictures of yourself, and don’t bully people on social media sites. Another thing I got from the presentation is that there are millions of actual sites I have never heard of; for example, Linkedin. Linkedin is a social media site that Kelsey explained to us. It is where professionals and businesses are so that is where most college graduates are going to find a new job instead of using things like the newspapers. I will be setting up an account for Linkedin soon because I find it is something I will use in the future. Kelsey helped me become more aware of how social media cites can help you and hurt you in the future.
