Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods

A clear comprehension of the quantitative and qualitative methods allows researchers to know when to use what method. At times both these methods are necessary, knowledge about how and when to incorporate the mixed method is essential. An understanding of the different methods and how they can influence the functions within the human service field is crucial. The quantitative methods, “ a type of educational research in which the researcher decides what to study; asks specific, narrow questions; collects quantifiable data from participants; analyzes these numbers using statistics; and conducts the inquiry in an unbiased, objective manner. Quantitative research relies on statistical data and explores the substantial facts. When questions need facts as a basis for answers such as population data, and percentages the quantitative method is appropriate. This method ensures decisions are achievable without bias and bases findings on concrete ideas which can be proven.

The qualitative method, “a type of educational research in which the researcher relies on the views of participants; asks broad, general questions; collects data consisting largely of words (or text) from participants; describes and analyzes these words for themes; and conducts the inquiry in a subjective, biased manner.” Qualitative research focuses on human behaviors that are immeasurable. When seeking answers to how solutions may affect the people aspect of the human service organization the qualitative method may prove beneficial. Decisions made within the organization will have profound effects on the people; the culture, beliefs, and values need consideration.

These methods of research both refer to the practices and procedures the scientific method suggests. Differences are in how researchers conduct this process.
