In September of 1962 Cuba with assistance of Soviet Union began building missile bases capable of carrying medium range to intermediate range ballistic nuclear missiles. In October of the same year the U.S. U-2 spy plane obtains photographic evidence of proof that Soviet missile bases are under construction in Cuba. The next day CIA informs president Kennedy of their discovery. Joint Chiefs of Staff urge president to do a pre-emptive air strike on Cuba destroying the missile sites. On October 20th 1962 president Kennedy meets with his advisors and orders a defensive quarantine instituted as soon as possible, the next day he decides on a quarantine of Cuba for the time being. On the 22nd the President addresses the nation in a televised speech, announcing the presence of offensive missile sites in Cuba, U.S. military goes to DEFCON 3. On the 24th most of the Soviet ships with questionable cargo either slow down or reverse course all except one, and U.S. goes to DEFCON 2. on the 26th president Khrushchev sends a letter to Kennedy proposing removing his missiles if Kennedy would publicly announce never to invade Cuba. On October 27th A U-2 plane is shot down over Cuba, another U-2 plane strays into Russian territory nearly being intercepted by Russian fighters. Kennedy writes Khrushchev a letter stating that he will make a statement that the U.S. will not invade Cuba if Khrushchev removes the missiles from Cuba. Finally on October 28th, 1962 Khrushchev announces over Radio Moscow that he has agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba.
