Target's history/competition/differentiation

“Expect More Pay Less” is what Target customers have come to anticipate when they shop with this discount retailer. Target has set itself apart from many in the retail industry. As a discount retailer Target is ahead of the curve in the customer service they provide and the great everyday low prices that appeal to their more modern and trendy minded customers by presenting a unique collection of home, apparel and electronics to its consumers. Target Corporation first started as a discount store in Roseville, Minnesota in the 1962. The name Target was thought of by the parent company Dayton Hudson, they owned the rights to Target and its operation at the time of Target’s first store opening. The Dayton Hudson Company wanted to distinguish Target, from its more upscale stores they already had in existence. This is because Target was going to be a discount retail store that sold designer items that the everyday consumers would not be able to find anywhere else. Target became a huge success and became an anchor store for many shopping outlets and malls in America. Target’s success ballooned that Dayton Hudson officially had changed their name to Target Corporation in the year of 2000 because it became a more recognizable brand and a profitable company. In 2005 Target had expanded its store growth up to 1,397 stores that were scattered through 47 states. Since, 2005 they have expended there stores to the entire United States except Vermont. In addition to its expansion Target became a giant in the discount retail store business revenue wise as well, making $52.6 billion in revenue in the 2005 fiscal year. This was an incredible achievement for Target Corporation considering its competitors it has to face on a day to day basis.
