Rural High School Youth’s Use of School-to-Work Programs in California

School-to-Work (STW) programs are used in order for the youth to break barriers and increase career exposure. This program is ultimately a tool to facilitate connections between school and work. Adolescents will be able to be in a better position to find work environments that allow them to express themselves and create opportunities that will be put them ahead of their peers. Test and inferential statistics were done to schools that participated in STW programs within their curriculum and studies show that students gained a more realistic expectation of their future. STW programs also gave “adolescents an opportunity to understand themselves and by a student understanding the world of work are in a better position to find work environments that allow them to express themselves or what is important to them” (Rural). This program has had very successful results that have helped students become successful individuals. This model demonstrates that students need to be aware of different careers to explore. Most importantly this model gave students the opportunity to shadow professionals, learn technical skills, and explore a different environment.

Ohio’s Future at Work

The Ohio’s State board of Education was empowered by legislation in Senate Bill 140 to prepare students of all ages for careers and post secondary education. The program was in place to have students focus on lifelong learning needs and the provision of career-focused education for all students. The goal is to have students develop a career plan before they enter the ninth grade. (CITATION) The program is a learning process for students that begins in kindergarten and continues until the eighth grade. The student needs to write down career goals and short terms goals within their plan that needs to be meet in High School.
