'What is Human Services'

Abstract

Most of the general public, don’t have a clear or concise working knowledge of human services, in this paper I will show in 950 words or more the nature and purpose of human practice.#1: By first showing, the goal of human services. #2 The history of human services. #3 common intervention strategies and #4: ethical consideration.

The conclusion; will give a synopsis of the paper and example of human services at work in today’s society.

The goal of human services: is to be able to act on social issues in a variety of social and human service environments. The way they address these issues is through direct services, program development, advocacy, or non-profit and human services management.

The provider should be willing to work in human, social and public sector jobs such as social and welfare agencies, mental health agencies, environmental agencies, animal shelters, treatment facilities, youth and criminal justice agencies and nursing homes.

History of Human Services:

“The history of human services can be traced back to the1950’s when there was a new awareness that portions of our population were in need of services. This awareness was accompanied by legislation moving many services to communities, which spurred many grassroots organizations led by consumers needing services. In 1956 the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) provided the resources that enabled Purdue University to start an associate degree program in mental health. This was the beginning of human service programs developing in different parts of the country. While programs were initially developed at the two-year associate degree level, today there are an equal number of bachelor-level programs.

Human service workers are called upon to work with individuals and groups for a variety of purposes and in many different settings.  Work with individuals may include: ...
