Nursing Philosophy

Most philosophies in nursing that I have read center mainly around the patient and the quality of care they receive. In understanding this, then it’s easy to understand how nurses follow this philosophy in order to provide the best care they can and stand by their values and visions.

When researching my hospital for our nursing philosophy, I found that we have an implied philosophy through our mission/vision/values statement. In reading this mission statement, “to give the best team focused quality of patient care while maintaining a quiet caring environment,” I believe the nursing philosophy is implied. As I compared this philosophy to Roberts Wesleyans nursing philosophy, I found that they both focused on the patient and the care given to not only them but the family involved as well. In Roberts’s philosophy, it states “Professional nursing is a discipline based on theory, practice and research.” I believe this to be true because as professional we are bound to do our jobs as best we can but also to keep learning and researching new techniques to improve the way we care for our patients.

When I asked about my coordinator what our nursing philosophy was at our facility, she stated we didn’t have a nursing philosophy per say but we had our mission/vision/values statement instead. When asked why we didn’t have a philosophy, she had no answer because she herself wasn’t sure of that answer. I asked a few coworkers, new one and ones who have been there a long time, if they knew if we had a nursing philosophy. I was surprised when they all asked

what nursing philosophy? When I showed them our mission/vision/values statement, they all came to one conclusion: that our nursing philosophy is to provide the best and most informative care to our patients that we can.
