Silk Roads- The various branches of a 4,000-mile-long caravan route that connected China in the east to Mediterranean Sea in the west, passing through regions such as India and the Middle East. It acquired its name when the Roman Empire used it to import silk from China in exchange for wool, gold, and silver.

Bubonic Plague- A high fatal disease transmitted by fleas that devastated the Mediterranean world between 534 and 750 C.E. and was most likely the disease referred to as the Black Death, which ravaged Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa between 1346 and 1350.

Indian Ocean Trading Network- The mass, interconnected web of commerce among the lands that bordered on the Indian Ocean. Beginning with the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Indus Valley, it eventually stretched from southern China to eastern Africa and included not only the exchange of luxury and bulk goods but also the exchange of ideas and crops. It was the world’s largest sea-based system of communication and exchange before the network was badly disrupted by Portuguese intrusion beginning around 1500.

Pagan- From the Latin term meaning “a country-dweller”; within the Christian world, a follower of a non-Christian religion, often a polytheistic or shamanistic tradition. In the time of early Christianity, it referred to a person who worshipped the Greco-Roman gods.

Trans-Saharan Slave Trade- A fairly small-scale but long-lived trade that developed in the twelfth century, exporting West African slaves captured in raids across the Sahara for sale mostly as household servants in Islamic North Africa. The difficulty of travel across the desert limited the scope of this trade.

Sumptuary Laws- were imposed by rulers to curb the expenditure of the people. Sumptuary laws might apply to food, beverages, furniture, jewelry and clothing. These Laws were used to control behavior and ensure that a specific class structure was maintained.
