INTRODUCTION

The romantic period which follows the classical era began around 1820 and extended through the remainder of the 19th century. Musical romanticism is difficult to characterize in broad strokes because there are so many ways that romantic sensibility (feelings) manifested itself; in the case of art and music. Impulses that would be romantic in literary or philosophical terms can be found in the works of composers who had no avowed allegiance to musical, romanticism itself as self-conscious movements.

It’s important to note that as the century progressed from the renaissance, music became increasingly available and popular to the middle class, concerts halls provide venues for musical performances and instrumental music was available to a wide range of audience. Composers had public audience for their works and also, had large spaces for performance.

Musical forms were still the same as the classical era but more forms were developed like strophic, through compose and song cycle, these three new developed forms were referred to as art song. Again, harmony during the romantic era was complex because composers tend to use unfamiliar scales and chord other than the major and minor scales, such chord and scales come from chromatic scales.
