What demographic variables would affect employees’ perception toward job motivation in Glasgow?

Introduction

It is known that nowadays lots of companies are experiencing low productivity due to employees’ negative working morale (Golden, 2011:5). In order to gain a competitive advantage in the fiercely competitive business environment, companies have to consider effective motivation strategies (Ahmad and Khalaf, 2009). Nevertheless, many managers failed to use effective ways to motivate their workers (Ahmad and Khalaf, 2009). As a result, many companies are suffering from low productivity and having high turnover rates. Employees in the workplace have to be motivated in order to deal this problem. Just as Sandhya and Kumar (2011) stated that high employee satisfaction increased by motivation can boost productivity as well as reducing turnover rate.

There are many theories which consider employees’ motivation, the most representative one is Herzberg’s two-factor motivation theory. Herzberg et al (1959) suggested that there are two aspects which contribute to employees’ motivation: Hygiene Factors (also called extrinsic factors) and Motivating Factors (also called intrinsic factors). Hygiene Factors are extrinsic to the work itself, such as payment, company policies, working conditions etc. to prevent employees from being unsatisfied. Motivating Factors arise from intrinsic conditions of the job itself, such as recognition, sense of achievement, personal growth etc. that increase job satisfaction.
