Seeing God in Everything

As Christians we are taught that God created the world and the universe and the heavens. We learn that everything in the world was breathed into existence by Him and is held together by His word. Although we believe this, it is hard for us to see Him in everything that we see and everything that we do. As I have gone through my education at Xavier this is the part of my faith that I have simultaneously struggled mightily with and grown the most in.

As people, we continuously look at creation and value this creation over the Creator. This is a trap that we fall into. Everything has been created for the glory of God, and the beauty and goodness of creation is there to reflect the goodness of God and to point back to the Creator. Unfortunately, we fall into the trap of seeing creation and investing ourselves in the happiness, beauty, and pleasure that come from these things only to feel betrayed and end up unfulfilled. As a Christian, this is one of the hardest concepts that I have attempted to wrap my head around, but understanding that we will never get fulfillment from investing in creation, but rather the Creator has been one of the coolest moments of growth that I have been able to experience.

As we grasp this, we begin to look around us and see the beauty in nature, the great taste of food, the incredible architecture of certain buildings, and the happiness that stems from relationships with others and see that this goodness points back to the Creator. This beauty is a reflection of Him and just a small taste of the glory that will be revealed. These characteristics of the world and of our lives are opportunities that promote worship, not of the things themselves, but of God. During my time at Xavier, I have been able to see this distinction and am now able to actually look around and see the power and beauty of God in everything, which is nothing short of incredible.
