Public Speaking Book Evaluation

When you are evaluating a textbook, there are several things to look at before introducing it to your students. The book needs to be relevant to the course, useful to the students, and student-friendly. It is your job as the teacher to make the crucial decision of what book is going to be used in class. Having been in the public speaking course with the book iSpeak: Public Speaking for Contemporary Life and using it, I know how useful and student-friendly it is. The question whether this is the best book for the class, and should it be chosen for future public speaking classes. Who better to ask than a student who uses it and studies from it? Well I’m going to give you my honest opinion on iSpeak: Public Speaking for Contemporary Life and tell you if it should be used in the future.

The public speaking book, iSpeak: Public Speaking for Contemporary Life, has numerous features that are useful to the everyday college student. One of the main things that makes these books so great is that they are lightweight and relatively small. This book is not a problem to carry around and won’t take up room in a backpack. There is brief a table of contents with just a little about what’s in each chapter. After that, there is a more in depth table of contents with some facts and basic information on the chapter. For example, chapter one is broken down into smaller subtopics and has the page numbers for easy finding. Also, before each chapter there are paragraphs about the key elements included in the chapters to give students an idea of what they’re going to be reading. There is an appendix, a glossary, and references pages that complete the book at the end.

Throughout all of the chapters, there are many things to keep the readers interested in the text. There are images, charts, and tables that help the reader to fully understand the text; these really help break up the text and give the reader something else to look at. For example, in...
