Introduction: After high school, college should be next. Because the cost of living is gradually increasing, people are finding themselves in need of more cash. To some college students, credit cards are just extra cash for them to spend. Sooner or later they realize they have to pay back everything they spent plus interest. Some end to deep in debt and never get out. Credit card companies should not be on campus marketing to college students.

Credit card debt is a heavy burden for a college student. From finding their first job, to paying for their living expenses; college students have plenty going on in their new lives. In addition to credit debt, the debt of college loans is added upon graduation. The burden can leave students feeling desperate and trapped, and sadly this may result in suicide. According to The Student Pirgs, credit card companies take advantage of the limited knowledge of college students (The Student Pirgs. 2010. p. 1). The last thing a college students needs is the burden of credit card debt.

College students are the perfect target because they are least likely to pay and more likely to file bankruptcy. They are most profitable people for credit card companies. Young college students can find themselves buried in debt and only make the minimum payments, but the credit card companies believe that parents will bail out college students when the debt gets to overwhelming. PCBS says that college students overspend and stay with their first credit card for many years (PCBS, 2010. p. 1). College students do not know how to be financially responsible; they are too young to know.

It takes little effort by the credit card companies to convince a college student to sign up for a credit card. Credit card companies will often offer free sandwiches or free T-shirts for credit card applications. Free things are very nice and are that much more enjoyable, but this is not the way to find the best card available. Because credit cards...
