This incident is an example of instrumental aggression because the shooter was not trying to hurt other individuals but rather end the pain that he experienced in his youth. I would say that psychoanalytic theoretical position would explain the shooters behavior because of the experiences he went thru as a child. Aggression is defined as behavior aimed at causing harm or pain, psychological harm, or personal injury or physical distraction. Overt behaviors are those which are directly observable, such as talking, running, scratching or blinking. Covert behaviors are those which go on inside the skin.
