For this first assignment for the class of Innovation, Design and creativity, first these terms should be defined. Perhaps the general perception of these terms can vary according to the way it is implemented in the business world. What is innovation? In the general essence of innovation, it is defined as something new and out of the ordinary, according to Von Stamm, B. (2008), “creativity is an essential building block for innovation; equaling creativity plus (successful) implementation”.
Generally when thinking about design one might consider things such as the design of a house, vehicle, and handbag etcetera. So it can be said that design is the way a certain object looks or the final outcome of a certain type of “design”. According Von Stamm, B. (2008) Design is the conscious decision-making process by which information (an idea) is transformed into an outcome, be it tangible (product) or intangible (service).
How about creativity? It is the creation of innovative unique things (new ideas). As Mumford, M. D. (2003). It is referred to as the phenomenon whereby something new is created which has some kind of subjective value (such as an idea, a joke, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc).
Now what is the importance or relation between these terms in application to the business world? Whatever type of business, there comes a point where the business or product will need to be refreshed, updated or better said, innovated. To obtain an innovation there must be creativity and design involved otherwise the refreshment or updating of a product, service or business would not happen. Things are in constant improvement or upgrade. People and society change; the demands and expectations change. Therefore a business must have all three elements of innovation, creativity and design to be able to reinvent itself to keep up with the constant change and demands of business.
