Chapter 6

1. It could at times be difficult to get everyone on the same page. Because stakeholders have job related tasks and personal lives it makes it difficult to arrange meetings face to face. In some instances people can underestimate the amount of time it will take to complete a task.

2. By defining activities you are able to manage your time wisely. Tasks can be arranged in the best way possible to not waste time. Defining activities involves identifying the specific activities that must be completed to produce the project deliverables. It usually results in a more detailed WBS.

3. Sequencing activities determines the relationships or dependencies between activities. Three reasons for creating relationships are that they are mandatory based on the nature of the work, discretionary based on the project team’s experience, or external based on non-project activities. Activity sequencing must be done in order to use critical path analysis.

4. Estimating activity resources involves determining the quantity and type of resources (people, equipment, and materials) that will be assigned to each activity. The nature of the project and the organization will affect resource estimates.

5. The effort estimate is related to how many hours will be spent performing an activity. The activity duration estimate includes the effort but it also includes how much time passes on a calendar in order to generate the project schedule.

6. Gantt charts, critical path method, PERT, and critical chain scheduling

a. A gantt chart displays a schedule for a project in a calendar format.

b. The critical path for a project will tell you the earliest completion time for a project.

c. PERT is a network analysis technique that requires you to apply a weighted average to determine the duration estimate for tasks.

d. Critical chain scheduling accounts for resource constraints and suggests that you limit multitasking of resources...
