Missional Prayer Meetings

“Prayer is involved in the shaping of history. In prayer, we are engaging at the very command centre of the universe!” (Porterbrook Module, Keeping it Missional).

“Prayer is a means of engaging in God’s mission. When we pray our eyes should be lifted to the King on the throne; we engage with him there in the project of mission prompted by love for the lost and an all-encompassing desire for his glory. There should also be something attractive about our prayers. There should be something that commends the God we worship to non-Christians among us.”

5 Concrete Suggestions:

1. Retain a Missional Agenda

2. Encourage and Model Praying Missional About Everything

3. Recognise the non-Christians around you as you pray

4. Talk through issues raised when prayer requests are made so that non-Christians see you counseling one another with the gospel.

5. Pray in a God-centred way.

Example Outline for a Prayer Meeting:

1. Take time to explain how prayer is a means of engaging in God’s mission.

2. Have a list of the prayer needs and give the people involved a theological and missional vision for how and why we desire God to answer them (ex. needs of neighbours to know and love Jesus, physical healing for church member, specific needs for other churches).

3. Spend intentional time focusing on praising God for who he is and what He has done for us in Christ.

4. Pray for specific requests in a missional way.
