Topic: Describe the Development of Fascism

While socialism was transforming the former Russian Empire another political force emerged, Fascism. Fascism in Europe was composed of numerous ideologies present during the 20th century which all developed their own differences from each other. This political movement which sought to create a viable society was born in Italy and subsequently, across Europe, several movements which took influence from it emerged. After World War I, Italy's constitutional monarchy was undermined by economic downturn and political chaos. The upper and middle classes, fearing social breakdown and communist revolution, sought a strong leader to restore stability, but election after election returns weak governments. The king turned to Benito Mussolini, leader of the Fascist Party, placing him in charge of Italy's government for 21 years. Fascism, Mussolini's invention is best described as right-wing radicalism. It is an anti-communist but also an anti-capitalist and anti-democratic approach. Mussolini with his new creation modernized Italy with new highways, literacy campaigns, and the industrial development of Italy's more backward regions. Also, Mussolini was able to carry this out by killing and arresting few people compared to leaders such as Hitler and Stalin. The Fascist and authoritarian economies typically followed the principles of syndicalism, a form of state capitalism, in which business leaders, rather than practicing free trade, cooperate directly with the government. In exchange for obedience, they receive preferential treatment, and the regime ensures that labor unions pose no challenge to them. This approach prevailed in fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, Japan, and many minor dictatorships. (248 Words)
