America, between the years of 1941 and 1945, witnessed the surge of lovers and families torn apart by the ravages of war. At the time, the many relationships forged between men and women teetered on the prospect of whether departed loved ones would ever be reunited again: “No tears, no fears…Remember, there’s always tomorrow…So what if we have to part…We’ll be together again.” The words are those of Frankie Laine. In collaboration with the pianist and songwriter Carl Fischer, music was added to his full lyrics, and the song, “We’ll Be Together Again,” was recorded in 1945, appropriately, to reminisce about the lives of those young men and women who were vastly affected by the Second World War. Particularly, the war had brought many changes to the lives of countless women throughout our country. These women, wives, girlfriends, sisters, and moms, alike, who were left behind, contended with innumerable problems that they were ill-equipped to face. The song strongly commemorates their spiritual commitment to their loved ones who went off to defend and serve their country. As they saw it, in life, there is usually a tomorrow, and occasionally, there are circumstances in that life that might dictate a parting of sorts from loved ones. The parting is usually, only temporary. For when two people are and remain spiritually connected, they (“we”) will be rewarded with the chance to be together again. The eternalness of spiritual connection, whether to a loved one, to one’s G_d, to one’s pet, or even to one’s own cause, is preserved, even when there is the experience of parting ways. Heart-felt memories seem to always endure, forever, and withstand and triumph over the inconveniences and misfortunes associated with separation. When the separated are apart, there are those moments of temptation and sadness that enshroud the circumstances, always attempting to sever the permanence of their existing bonded relationships that are based on spiritual connection.
