Virtues and Values are essential in today’s health care today. Virtue, by definition, is a person full of high morals and standards. They are trustworthy, forgiving, courageous, respectful, and honest just to name a few. They also possess these positive character traits, no matter what they do the right thing and does not bend to self-impulse and desires, and act according to their values and principles. Some might say that good qualities are innate and developed through good parenting, which they are, but we’re not perfect. Virtues need to be practiced often become more prevalent and habitual in daily life. With the habit of being more virtuous, we take the helm of our own life, redirecting its course towards greater fulfillment, peace and joy (Virtues for Life 2015). Values are things that really matter to us, ideas or beliefs that we hold dear and feel as though they are special to us. Caring for others, for example, is a value; so is the freedom to express our opinions. Many people learn their values - or morals at home, at church or synagogue, at school. Children tend to learn from their parents, religious leaders and teachers, but in today’s society things have changed. Many young people are highly influenced by the things they see on television or what they hear in the streets and on the radio.
With these values and virtues following right behind, a person can actually create a life that is good and successful. The effects of virtues and values on one’s character can affect a person personally, academically and professionally. In virtues a person's character will define their ethical character. Value can affect one's character negatively or positively. Not all values will lead to virtues, but lead to devices instead.
