Apple Inc.

Apple systems introduced their first computer, the Apple l, in 1976. The company was started by two high school friends, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. In the 70’s these two men drop out of college to build computers, and even built their own personal computers.

Apple began with the mission to “change the world through technology.” More specifically, the company sought out to make the personal computer an accessible and affordable device to the mass market. The company has survived the blooms and busts of the computer industry through new innovations in both software and hardware that has differentiated itself from its competitors. With the effort new inventions for portability and functionality will allow them to become more competitive in their targeted market and still be cost competitive.

The company incorporated January 3, 1977, was known as “Apple Computer Inc.” for its first 30 years. On January 9, 2007, the company dropped “Computer” from its corporate name, reflecting the company’s on-going expansion into the consumer electronic market.

For a variety of reasons, Apple has engendered a distinct reputation in the consumer electronics industry and has cultivated a consumer base that is unusually devoted to the company and its brand, particularly in the U.S.

The company introduced the Apple II microcomputer in March 1977. A few years later, in 1983, it introduced the Lisa, the first commercial personal computer. Lisa was also the first computer to have the mouse. In 1984, the MacIntosh was introduced, which advanced the concept of a new user friendly computer. Apple’s success with the MacIntosh became a major influence in the development of graphical interfaces.

In 1991, Apple introduced the Power Book line of portable computers. The 1990’s also saw Apple’s market fall as competition from Microsoft Windows and the comparatively inexpensive IBM PC compatible computers that would eventually dominate the market.
