Motivation – the forces within a person that affect his or her direction, intensity, and persistence of voluntary behavior

MARS MODEL – values, personality, perceptions, emotions and attitudes, and stress affects motivation, ability, role perceptions, and situational factors. These four combine to form behavior and results

Ability – the natural aptitudes and learned capabilities required to successfully complete a task

Competencies- skills, knowledge, aptitudes, and other personal characteristics that lead to superior performance

Clear role perceptions:

1. Understand the specific tasks assigned to employees, meaning that they know the specific duties or consequences for which they are accountable.

2. Understand the priority of their various tasks and performance expectations. Quality over quantity.

3. Understand the preferred behaviors to accomplish the assigned tasks.

Situational Factors – conditions beyond the employee’s immediate control that constrain or facilitate behavior and performance (e.g. EXTERNAL: consumer preferences and economic conditions INTERNAL: time, people, budget, and physical work facilities

Personality – the relatively enduring pattern of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that characterize a person, along with the psychological processes behind those characteristics

Personality theory says that people have inherent characteristics or traits that can be identified by the consistency or stability of their behavior across time and situations

Most experts not agree that personality is shaped by both nature and nurture. Nature refers to our genetic or hereditary origins – the genes that we inherit from our parents. Nurture is the person’s socialization, life experiences, and other forms of interaction with the environment.
