Personal Responsibility

Personal responsibility is essential for an individual to take proper care of his or herself morally, ethically, socially, physically, and mentally to function at his or her optimal level in all aspects of life. Through life experiences I have gained a better understanding of the importance of personal responsibility in achieving success. “Adult students benefit from being able to associate new learning with their previous experiences and accomplishments” (Howell, 2003). Returning to college to further my education has caused me to examine my new responsibilities in my life. I will now discuss my current responsibilities and how they relate to my plan in achieving college success.

My personal responsibility begins at my home. I am a husband and a father of three young children. Being designated as the head of the household bears with it the responsibility to maintain full functionality of the household. When I manage my time, take responsibility for my actions, and stay prepared, my family’s life is less stressed. Personal responsibility carries over into my work environment as well. My personal opinion is that a person who employs personal responsibility in his or her personal life will do better at work and other areas of life. The expectations of my employer are that I do all duties required of me in my job description; to do that I must know my job, manage my time efficiently, take responsibility for my actions, and stay current in education and practices. Without doing these practices I would not be as effective at my job, and the burden would shift to my coworkers. Ensuring these responsibilities are taken care of allows me to focus my attention on other areas of my life.
