The play begins with Annie’s parents dropping her off on the steps of the orphanage in New York. They leave her with a locket and a note saying they will be back to get her. The play then fast-forwards to 1933 Annie now eleven years old living in the orphanage with Pepper, Duffy, July, Molly, Tessie, and Kate, which is ran by Miss Hannigan. Molly is awoken by a bad dream and Annie comes to comfort. Molly asks Annie to read her the note her parents gave her, this note gives Annie hope that her parents are still out there somewhere. Annie then decides that she is going to run away from the orphanage and find her parents, but is met by a hung over Miss Hannigan at the door. Who then makes the girls scrub the floors and do other chores. Mr. Bundles, the laundry man, arrives to pick up the laundry and while him and Miss Hannigan talk Annie climbs into his laundry sack and escapes from the orphanage. Shortly after Miss Hannigan realizes that Annie has escaped. Outside the orphanage Annie runs into a stray dog that she names sandy. She later finds herself at a Hooverville, where people who have become homeless due to the Great Depression live. It is there where Annie is captured by a police officer and returned to the orphanage. When Annie returns to the orphanage Grace Farrell, Oliver Warbucks assistant, comes looking for an orphan to spend Christmas at the mansion. With Annie already being in Miss Hannigan’s office she asks to take her. Annie is greeted with smiles and open arms by Mr. Warbucks staff when she arrives to the mansion. However when Warbucks returns home he greets Annie with a different tone. He tells Grace to take Annie to the movies and even though he has a lot of work to catch up on Annie persuades him to join them. On their trip to the movies Warbucks attitude about Annie changes.
