General Function of Performance Management Systems

There are several reasons why the utilization of a performance management system can assist with improving the healthcare field. Quality is a very important reason, measuring how many patients are returning for reoccurring illnesses is an indicator that effective healthcare is not being provided the first time the patient visits the hospital. Efficiency is another reason, is the hospital using the most effective methods? For example, are the doctors electronically submitting prescriptions or are they utilizing paper RX methods; are patients allowed to view information regarding previous visits online or do they have to call or come into the hospital, can patients schedule appointments online or do they need to call, etc. Transparency is another reason for measuring performance. Key stakeholders and the board of directors want to be able to analyze the information retained by the performance management systems. This can give them an idea of whether or not the organization is set up for success. They also want to be able to ensure that quality healthcare care that is being provided. The same can be said for the patients and friends and family of patients. They want to have the peace of mind that their loved one are in the best hands possible. Lastly, accreditation is essential to operate as a healthcare provider. Patton-Fuller Community Hospital needs to stay in compliance with federal and state guidelines, and performance system management is a great way to measure compliance.
