Learning Team: Protocol Paper

Communication protocols is a system of digital rules for data exchange within or between computers. Protocols are present throughout the different levels of a network. These protocols ensure that there is a sense of uniformity throughout different networks. “The TCP/IP Internet protocols, a common example, consist of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which uses a set of rules to exchange messages with other Internet points at the information packet level, Internet Protocol (IP), which uses a set of rules to send and receive messages at the Internet address level”(Rouse, 2007).

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is divided into 7 separate layers. Layers 1 through 3 are important to the telecommunication networks while 4 through 7 occur at the end node. Layer 1 is the physical layer. It consists of and defines the transmission mediums. Some of the characteristics of this layer are the types of cables, transmission rates, connectors, and voltage levels. Examples of layer 1 protocols include 100BASE-T, ISDN, and SDH/SONET. These protocols all discuss and define the transmission medium.

Layer 2 is the data link layer. This layer acts as the interface between the network and the media. It prepares the data to be transmitted over the wires or airwaves. Devices or standards that operate in the data link layer perform the task of putting the transmission into packages, or frames, which can travel between network devices. This layer is where information such as error controls and flow instructions are inserted. Data link occurs in multiple areas of internetworking, including LAN and WAN...
