Introduction
In the developed world the used of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a welcomed and important instrument for change. Programmes created through the use of ICT are often used to improve the efficiency of organisations and to align them with industry best practices. In the same vein, Governments the world over are constantly under pressure to improve the quality of service they offer to their clients in an effort to create greater levels of accountability and transparency.
Emerging research shows the potential of technology, moreso mobile technology, to drastically change governments and to provide public information and services in areas where they may not have been easily accessible in the past.
As a result, the use of mobile technology is becoming a popular focal point for government efforts in many countries. Many of these countries have started to implement and adopt their own versions of online services and platforms. “E-Government” as it is now referred is fast becoming the next big thing for ITC in the public sector. For many government agencies, however, e-government is still in its infancy, and, in many cases, it is still part of an overall plan of public sector modernization. In spite of ongoing challenges, technology offer enormous potential to represent mainstream government/citizen interaction.
