I’ve attended the first session of my Integrated Case Study class of my final semester today, my lecturer, Dr John was a familiar face because she had previously taught me a number of subjects in the past couple of years of my stay in MMU.

As usual, the first session of each subject is always the “introduction class” where the students will learn about the overview of the subject. Dr John explained about the subject using the course outline she had personally edited. Dr John also said that this subject is very different from any other subject that we had previously taken because our usual subjects are all lecturer centric. However, for the Integrated Case Study, it is a student centric subject. A lecturer centric subject is where the students receive knowledge, when our listening skills, note taking skills, comprehension and application skills are put to test. For a student centric subject, students are required to “create” knowledge. It is more sophisticated because students’ analytical skills, issue identification, problem solving and communication skills above note taking and comprehension are fully tested by putting students in a simulated real world situation and requiring them to solve any problem thrown at them without being able to pick your own “team”.

This brings me to my next point where we are informed that for this semester, we are unable to pick our fellow group mates for assignments like in previous semesters. This is an add-on to the real world situation where nobody is able to pick their own colleagues, they are given orders to work with whoever the organization provides. Apparently this is a good way to train us to work with people we might not like or have negative feelings about. In the outline, it was listed that only a few people doing all the work, some are not contactable, clash in thoughts, etc....
