Raisin in the Sun written by Lorraine Hansberry focuses on the Younger’s family dreams for a better future. Three characters in particular struggle deeply. Each characters struggle are independent yet they still rely heavily on one another. Walter with a dream of a rich future, Beneatha’s dream of being both a doctor and one with her heritage, and Ruth dreaming of a better future for her family and the best opportunity for her child/children.

Walter’s attention is solely on the money his mother, Mama, will be receiving from her husband’s life insurance policy. He wants Mama to give him the money so he can make his dream of owning a liquor store come true and be rich. Throughout the story, he is faced with many challenges and does not handle any of them well nor does he uphold the standards his mother expects from him. Walter devolves the attitude of a child in the acts of not getting what he wants and then having a temper. To make him happy Mama gives Walter what is left of the insurance money after she has already put a down payment on a house for the family and he has set aside money for his sister’s college education. Walter reaches his lowest point shortly after experiencing great joy of the reality of his dream coming true, he discovers the money his mother had given him for both and his sister had been taken; he decides to sell the house his mother had just bought back for a larger amount then what she purchased it for. He decides he will beg if he has to in order to correct the wrong, he has made. When the time comes for him to “perform “for the money, he realize the true importance of being a man. Walter then the man who is trying to buy back the house that he and his family are good hard working people, who will do their best to be good neighbors and not cause any problems, and that they are not selling their house, this is when Walter becomes a man.
