The OSI model is a standard developed by the ISO for the designing of computer networks and the term OSI stands for Open Systems Interconnection and it was developed by the ISO which is the International Standards Organization. The reference model that the OSI introduces divides particular networked processes into a total of seven different layers and those are going to be listed in the following paragraph.

The seventh layer of the OSI is the Application, the sixth is the Presentation, the fifth is the Session, the fourth is the Transport, the third is the Network, the second is the Data-Link, and the first would be Physical. The next point is that there is 2 ways to help a person to remember the layers and they are Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away and All People Seem To Need Data Processing. The last thing is that OSI stands for Open System Interconnection model.

The layers that WAN protocols operate on the OSI model would be focused on the Layer 1 and Layer 2 primarily and the WAN access standards typically describe both Physical layer delivery methods and Data-Link layer requirements. The requirements that are included would be the physical addressing, the flow control, and also the encapsulation as well. The WAN protocols that are involved within the OSI model are usually found at the lower three layers of the model and one of the protocols would be the Network Layer(X.25 PLP), the second protocol would be the Data Link Layer (FRAME RELAY), and the third protocol would be the Physical Layer(ISDN-B, ISDN-D, ISDN-H, H11,H12).

The level at which routers and switches would operate would be a multilayer switch operates as a layer 2 switch and also has layer 3routing capabilities and will sometimes have other functionality for higher layers of the OSI model.
