SAHAJ

SAHAJ, also known as Society for Health Alternatives was founded in 1984, with an idea of providing a supportive and facilitative atmosphere to persons interested in doing original work in the area of health and development.

The common strand for all work of SAHAJ has been a conscious focus on marginalized and deprived communities, with an attempt to make a practical difference to people’s lives and social processes. Much of it has been health and education-related, breaking new ground in strategies of implementation and service delivery.

SAHAJ is striving hard to accomplish its vision of a just, equitable and sustainable society where each child has an opportunity for quality education and every person is healthy. It is a general feeling among the members that all the problems in the society at the grass-root level are inter-related and there is no way of targeting one specific problem while overlooking other related problems. Therefore, while it was started in 1984 with core focus on Health, it subsequently expanded to include education and also helps marginalized sections of the society with their day to day problems. For example, SAHAJ is also actively involved in activities such as low-cost medicine production; holistic health and non-drug therapies; reproductive and health rights, training, organizational development and consulting in health care management; environment conservation and agriculture farming; fish workers’ and dalits’ rights; rituals and practices around birthing; policy advocacy related to reproductive health, pharmaceuticals, children’s education, child labour, primary school curricula etc.

SAHAJ’s founding members, as well as current ones are professionals with varying backgrounds with a sustained record of contributing to, and demonstrating, alternative approaches in areas of health and development.
