Discipline of Children

The purpose of this assignment is to research a topic that may come up if the writer of this paper becomes a case manager. In this paper, I will look at both sides of the argument, and present how I would work with a client and his or her family if I needed to make a decision on this type of case. For this purpose, I have decided to speak of some of the issues that might come into affect when dealing with children and discipline as well as the differences between discipline and abuse.

Discipline and Abuse

As a case manager, I will have to be ready for cases that involve children. These cases may also involve the investigation of what may seem to be a child abuse case. The core of this case will be to distinguish what may fall into the class of discipline and what may show signs of abuse. First, let take look at the definitions of both words.

* Discipline: punishment inflicted by way of correction and training, (Dictionary.com, LLC., 2010)

* Abuse: to treat in a harmful, injurious, or offensive way, (Dictionary.com, LLC., 2010)

Looking at the two definitions, I see distinct differences between the two. Discipline is a positive interaction in learning. Discipline comes in many forms such as restriction, the taking away of a favorite toy or video game, or the giving of extra work around the house.

Abuse can come as a negative enforcement action used to degrade, harm, and inflict pain on someone. This can then cause greater negative behavior, as well as cognitive difficulties in the individual. These new developing difficulties may not show up for years.

As a case manager it will be up to me to distinguish between the two and understand the differences. With my work at the Boys to Men Mentoring Organization, I have seen cases in which a juvenile screams to the point where a neighbor might find the need to call a protective organization.
